The Joys of Jell-o Cookbook, published in 1962, is brimming with kitsch and nostalgia. Jell-o is an iconic American food with a history steeped in gender roles, cultural attitudes around convenience and domesticity, and contemporary popular culture. These hand printed and embroidered aprons reimagine the saccharine color palette, playful textures and retro imagery from the Joys of Jell-o cookbook into textiles using abstracted shapes and forms found in the recipes which were screen printed onto fabric in a color palette inspired by the cookbook. The fabric was was then sewn into aprons and the final step was to add hand-embroidery, a popular practice from the 1960’s.
